Last week, we dropped the ghostwrite x NBA “Game Ball” 400%. At the risk of sounding like prideful parents, it was nothing less than an engineering marvel: 3D-printed and hand-painted, with a pebbled and grooved surface that’s just like a basketball.

This was our first product created in partnership with the NBA – or with any professional sports league, for that matter – and collectors took note.

“Game Ball” Auction Recap

Our Blind Dutch Auction ran for four days, ending on November 1st. A total of 60 “Game Ball” ghosts were released. Bids ranged as high as $3,000, but all winners paid a Clearing Price of $503. Here are the key stats:

Two things stand out here. First: you all are getting good at this. And by “this” we mean “bidding the market value of the ghost”.

There were 22 Bids that fell within $50 of the Clearing Price. That’s really close. Obviously, many of those bidders fell short, and that’s a bummer. But there’s comfort in knowing that next time, they’ll have a good chance of hitting the mark.

The second lesson from this auction is the lesson of every auction: it’s all about supply and demand.

From a supply perspective, this was our biggest auction to date. We released 60 “Game Ball” ghosts in the auction. That’s a tiny number by most standards, but by our standards, it’s a big one.

Yet despite the increased supply, the Clearing Price for this auction ($503) was the second highest in our history. What gives?

The answer lies in the second part of the equation: demand. The Kross to supply’s Kris. The Stockton to supply’s Malone.

Demand for the “Game Ball” ghost, as reflected in the number of total bids, was more than 2x higher than four of our last five releases. The only drop with equivalent demand was the ghostwrite “One”. In that release, we only sold 20 ghosts, and the Clearing Price was $1,026. For the NBA “Game Ball”, we increased supply to 60, so the Clearing Price was $503.

Supply and Demand. Always and forever.

What’s Next

Here’s a clue: “We Got Next”. Our next release will be another first of its kind in more ways than one.

ghosts tell stories and this next release will tell a story that has been forthcoming since 1997. Clear off some space on your shelf, because you’re going to want to collect all of the ghosts (yes, many multiples!) in this collection.
