UPDATED 5/13: Grading Your ghosts With AFA

As of May 13, 2025 all of our publicly released ghosts are eligible for grading by AFA. That list includes all of the following:

The process to submit your ghost remains the same regardless of which one you’re sending in. Please review the instructions below and note that the grading promotion only applies to certain WNBA ghosts.

Pop quiz. What do these letters stand for? AFA. PSA. BGS. SGC. CGC. JSA. VGA. WATA. No, these are not government agencies or newly created college football conferences. They’re grading companies.

If you’re a collector, you already know that grading – of trading cards, sports memorabilia, comics, video games, toys, really any collectible at all – has been a major driver of the collectibles boom over the past decade.

Having a collectible that is graded can mean the difference between something that’s worth a couple of dollars and something that’s worth thousands. Grading adds credibility and standardization to collectibles; it also helps to support liquidity in the secondary market.

When we started ghostwrite, we knew that grading had to be part of the equation. And we knew we had to partner with the very best. No brainer here. When it comes to toys, AFA is the cream of the crop.

The Action Figure Authority (AFA) is a division of CGA – an umbrella company that grades everything from toys to dolls to video games. AFA provides dealers, collectors, and investors with a universally accepted standard by which to determine an item’s condition. Some of our favorite lines that AFA grades include Star Wars, GI Joe, MOTU, TMNT, and Transformers – just to name a few. 

We’ve partnered with AFA to provide grading services to our collectors.

If you want to get your ghosts graded, please follow these instructions:

1. Open a browser and go to https://cgagrading.com/
2. Click on “Online Submissions” on the top navigation bar
3. On the following page you’ll need to “Sign In” or “Create A New Account”
4. Once logged in, find the figure using the dropdown menu and/or search bar
   • We suggest searching for the name of the ghost you want to get graded
5. Select your specific ghost from the search results being sure you’ve selected the correct player parallel. This will be the “Variation” listed on the AFA site.
6. A pop-winder will now appear with several fields to complete.
7. Under “Step 1” enter the number of ghosts you want graded and a whole dollar amount for the “Fair Market” value equal to what you paid for your ghost
   • Example — Quantity: 1, Fair Market Value: $42
8. For “Step 2” you will need to select the “Service Tier”, “Label Type” and any of the other additional services offered by AFA
   • For “Service Tier” please select “Standard” as this is the option available for free to ghostwrite customers
   • For “Label Type” please select “Classic”
   • The three available upgrades are optional and will incur additional charges if selected
9. In “Step 3” there are two more fields to complete
   • Under item 1 “In case the item is Qualified” select option 2 “Open package and grade under Qualified Scale, if eligible”.
   • Under item 2 “In case the item is Refused” select “Return item as-is”
10. Click the “Add to Submission” button. The pop-up window will show all of your items added to your cart for grading.
11. Click “Next” and verify that the everything looks correct for your submission
12. Click “All Set – Let’s Keep Going” if you’re ready to check out or “I Have Another Item” if you want to submit something else to be graded
13. On the following screen verify the address you want your items shipped to and then click “Next”
14. Complete the “Terms and Conditions” requirements and then click “Submit Order”
15. A pop-up will appear to verify your order submission. Click “Yes”.
16. You will receive a confirmation email from AFA with your order details
17. Ship your ghost(s) per the instructions provided by AFA in the confirmation email

    • NOTE: AFA does not provide a shipping label for your submission
18. Once AFA receives your ghost, they will send you an email to confirm receipt, provide an estimated time to complete your grading, as well as the final costs for grading and shipping.
19. AFA will ship the graded figure back to you
